Adding just the right amount of reverb, that would give the atmosphere, but wouldn't clutter the mix, is usually virtually impossible. Well, was. By sending only prominent parts of your signal to the reverb, you get the atmosphere, but you still keep the signal clean. By sending the subtle parts of the signal instead, you can fill the voids in your audio without drowning the transients in reverb. And the same thing is true with a delay.

So, how about not drowning everything in some sort of distortion and giving the mojo only to the prominent parts? Phantomix lets you easily give some smack to the transients, but leaves the rest intact, making things sound rich but not distorted.

Sure, you can compress the hell out of it, but doing that cleanly is quite a challenge. So, how about compressing just the transients - the prominent parts of the signal?
